Welcome to
Thabela Thabeng
Thabela Thabeng means
“Be happy in the mountains.”
We are a unique guest farm in the Vredefort Dome near the gold rush town Venterskroon 18 km from Parys. The mountains around Thabela Thabeng were formed by the world’s largest and oldest meteorite impact, called the Vredefort Dome. Our mountain topography with breathtaking views and peaceful surroundings is just what you need for a weekend away from the big cities and buzzing towns. Only 100km from Johannesburg and 50 km from the Vaal triangle. Our Chalets are private, with unique architecture and views of the surrounding mountains.
Thabela is a haven for the nature lover, the adventurous, and anyone who loves to unwind in the luxury of a pristine natural environment.
Thabela Thabeng has over 400 bird species and ambles wildlife, that can be experienced on our hiking trails. Thabela Thabeng is home to Chacma baboons, Kudu, Mountain Reedbuck, Klipspringer, Dassies, and many more. The Buffleskloof mountain stream is a vein of life. Most animals rely on it for water sources in the mountains and it is so clean you can drink straight from the stream. Venterskroon valley is renowned for its export of quality pecan nuts and we are the proud owners of a pecan nut orchid of 1500 trees, contributing to the luscious ambiance of the farm.
The Vaal river has some of the best fly fishing and our waters are home to Large and Smallmouth yellow fish. We have some of the best waters on the whole Vaal river for Largemouth yellow fishing. Thabela Thabeng was founded by the van der Merwe family and is still run by them today. Johannes van der Merwe, conservationist, and architect, was the designer of our unique chalets that are engineered to hang on the mountain cliffs. He helped UNESCO to proklomate the Vedefort Dome world heritage site. Thabela Thabeng is rich in history and you can find traces from the stone age, iron age, and gold age on the property.
